Preliminary observation

The work is of an incredible craftmanship with regard to the polychrome decoration, woodcarving details and inlaid gold incrustations.
The work is in a mediocre state of conservation denoting the presence of wood-worm activity (boring-worms) extended over the whole surface and causing a weakening of the structure.
Evidence of previous restoration interventions that have altered the original chromatism of the painted surface.
The wings are in a fragmentary condition, particularly the right wing which is split in two and has been assembled with and external metal support. In between the two wings and on the back side, they have been covered with a dark cloth. In the front side it is observed layers of repaint which has darkened the original silver leaf decoration.
The gold leaf areas of the garment have been covered with an alcohol based varnish, and some of the decorative woodcarvings are missing.
Finally, even the shield is missing some of the woodcarving linear pattern and is completely covered with a dark varnish that hides the original silver leaf decoration.

Restoration project

The piece requires a process of de-infestation repeated at lest twice, a structural consolidation, and a consolidation of the pictorial coating and strata with previous protection of all the surfaces in need. Successive cleanings of the paint coatings will be done after previous testing.
The stucco on the missing parts will be done with 10% solution of "gesso of Bologna" and rabbit's glue. The pictorial integration will be directed by the Palermo's Superintend of Cultural Patrimony.
